At least 22 people were slightly injured in a train crash on Friday morning in the train station of Barcelona, Sants Estacio, local media reported.

Two trains were involved in the crash that occurred around 10:00 local time at one of the main stations of Barcelona, Sants Estacio.

A first train coming from Calella, around 60 km away from Barcelona, crashed into a second one coming from Terrassa, a city located 30 km away from Barcelona.

The crash caused delays of around 25 minutes in several lines, while other trains were diverted to alternative stations in Barcelona, Estacio de Franca.

The accident came after the country suffered the worst train crash in 40 years on July 24 in Santiago de Compostela in the north-western region of Galicia which killed 80 people and injured more than 150.

Sources from the Department of Territory and Sustainability of the regional government of Catalonia confirmed to Xinhua that the security system where the train accident occurred on Friday in Barcelona was old.

The same source said that the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) was not implemented, although Spain's central government last year recognized that the security system of the railway network in Catalonia needed to improve.

Local media also quoted the Director of Transport and Mobility from the regional government of Catalonia, Pere Padrosa, as saying that the signaling system was old and was not up to date with the circumstances due to lack of investment.
