British Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague have decided that it would be inappropriate for British ministers to attend the Sochi Paralympics in current circumstances in Ukraine, a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement Sunday.

"The Prime Minister remains gravely concerned about events in Ukraine and is determined to pursue all avenues to reduce tensions and de-escalate a very dangerous situation," the spokesperson said.

However, the prime minister remains "fully supportive" of British Paralympic athletes' participation at Sochi, the spokesperson added.

"A stable Ukraine is in the interests of everyone - including the UK. Ukraine is one of the largest countries in Europe and a neighbor of the European Union. Its economic prosperity, security and stability matter," the spokesperson noted.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine has been violated and this cannot be the way to conduct international affairs," the spokesperson continued.

"In current circumstances, the Prime Minister is clear that the focus of our engagement with Russia must be the situation in Ukraine, rather than other normal business," the spokesperson said.

Earlier on Sunday, Hague announced that Britain will not take part in any of the G8 preparatory meetings in Russia planned for this week.

"The United Kingdom will join other G8 countries this week in suspending our co-operation under the G8, which Russia chairs this year, including the preparation meetings this week for the preparation of the G8 summit," Hague announced the decision prior to his visit to Ukraine for talks with Ukraine's new leaders.

"We will keep our approach to further G8 meetings under review," he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that no decision had been made on sending troops to Ukraine, despite the Russian parliament approval.

European foreign ministers will meet on Monday to discuss the recent developments in Kiev.
