Two Israeli soldiers accused of leaking information to settlers
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-12 05:33

The Israeli army arrested Wednesday two soldiers who were charged with passing classified information of the army's movements in the West Bank to a group of right-wing settlers.

Five right-wing settlers were charged Sunday with storming an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) base last month in the West Bank and attacking Palestinian targets in the region.

One of the arrested soldiers belonged to the Paratrooper's Brigade and was arrested by the IDF on Wednesday morning, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The other soldier, who was part of the Golani Brigade, was detained by the Military Police, and accused of passing information about the IDF's movements to the right-wing activists from his cellular phone.

Both of them are under investigation by the Military Police, the IDF spokesperson office told Xinhua.

Local media reported earlier this week that among the list of sources used by the activists to track IDF's movements was right- wing Likud Member of Knesset (MK) and coalition chairman Ze'ev Elkin, who informed the extremists amid uncertainty of a possible outpost demolition.

Another MK, Uri Ariel from the far-right Ichud Leumi party, admitted last week, during a Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, to have passed information to the activists about army movements in the West Bank.

IDF sources said that the investigation into the settlers' activities is still ongoing, and that they were searching for additional soldiers who might have also provided classified information to the right-wing activists.
