Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-25 08:45

The Arab League (AL) will increase the number of its observers after the Gulf Cooperation Council ( GCC) withdrew its observers from Syria, AL Deputy Secretary General Ahmed Bin Heli said Tuesday.

According to the protocol between the bloc and the Syrian government, the Islamic and friend countries could send observers to join the AL mission, Heli told a press conference at AL headquarters here, which was also attended by Qatari ambassador to Egypt Saleh Albuainein.

The mission still performs its duty in the Syrian cities until getting response from the Syrian government to this crisis, Heli said, adding that some Arab countries are ready to increase the number of observers.

AL chief Nabil al-Arabi has also sent national and international officials letters concerning the Syrian crisis, calling for providing support for the Arab initiative of forming a Syrian national unity government within two months, Heli said.

An meeting of AL ministerial council on Sunday announced an initiative calling for forming a national unity government in Syria, as well as for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's handing over power to his deputy.

Meanwhile, Albuainein said on Tuesday that the withdrawal of the GCC countries' observers from Syria is a sovereign decision, and he emphasized that the Gulf states will continue their support for AL's work.
