Syrian official confirms GCC observers' departure from Syria
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-26 11:10

A Syrian foreign ministry spokesman said that around 50 Arab observers from the Gulf States left Syria on Wednesday after their countries decided a day earlier to withdraw them from the country.

The Arab League (AL) will provide replacements for those departing from Syria, Jihad Makdissi told Xinhua Wednesday.

Members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have decided to pull out of its observers from an AL monitoring mission to Syria, following the Saudi move, GCC said Tuesday in a statement.

According to the statement, the AL decided to respond to Saudi Arabia's decision to withdraw observers from Syria which was plagued by a ten-month-old unrest, and said GCC believes that the Syria leadership would not abide by the AL resolutions.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal has reportedly said that his country would pull out its observers because "the Syrian government did not implement the Arab plan."

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Tuesday that the GCC member countries' decision of withdrawal of their observers from Syria is their business, suggesting that the GCC doesn't want their people to see the reality of what is happening in Syria.
