Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-09 00:38

Syria's ministry of health on Wednesday denied as "baseless" media reports that a number of infants died in central Homs province due to lack of oxygen and electricity blackout.

"The reports by the instigative media are totally untrue," the ministry said in a statement carried by state TV.

The Local Coordination Committees, activists' network, was quoted by some Arab TVs as saying that 20 infants were killed during to a shortage of oxygen and electricity blackout.

Other activists were quoted by the Doha-based al-Jazeera TV as saying that as many as 70 people were killed in the bombardment of the Syrian army to restive areas in Homs.

Meanwhile, the state TV said that "armed terrorists" detonated Wednesday a bomb car at al-Bayyada area in Homs, leaving many killed and injured. It spelled out no further details on the incident.

It said that other terrorists blew up many explosive devices at Baba Amr neighborhood in Homs, leaving many casualties among civilians and government troops.

Homs, Syria's third largest city and home to about 800,000 people, has witnessed severe clashes between troops loyal to Assad and militia groups, allegedly comprising of Syrian army defectors.

The region is considered one of Syria's most volatile areas, as the daily grind of violence stocked fears that the central region has slid toward a civil war.

The Syrian government said more than 2,000 army and security personnel have been killed during the months-long unrest, while the United Nations put the death toll in the country at more than 5,400.
