Palestinian negotiator says Israeli PM responsible for peace talks failure
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-04 21:06

Top Palestinian negotiator on Wednesday accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deviating from his responsibility on the peace talks.

The Israeli government "wants to gain more time to intensify the occupation of the Palestinian territories," said Saeb Erekat, the chief negotiator.

Erekat's remarks came after Israeli media reports said that Netanyahu will send a letter urging Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to return to the negotiating table without precondition.

Netanyahu's message will be a response to a letter that Abbas will send to Israel within days, which is to blame Israel for the failure of the peace process and ask the Israeli government to recognize the basis of peace before any negotiations resume.

Erekat said that Abbas' letter will stress that the building of Jewish settlements and Israel's rejections to recognize the border of the future Palestinian state "shut the political horizon."

According to Israel's Haaretz newspaper, Netanyahu sees Abbas' demands as preconditions, but Erekat emphasized that they are " commitments and obligations that must be met."

Erekat added that the Palestinians are ready to resume the negotiations when Israel accepts the "commitments."

A Palestinian delegation consisting Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, a member of Palestine Liberation Organization's Executive Committee and Erekat will meet Netanyahu to give him the message, said Nemer Hammad, an aide to Abbas.

The Palestinian-Israeli peace talks stopped in 2010, when Israel renewed settlement activities after a 10-month freeze in the West Bank.
