Palestinians in northern Lebanon on Monday organized two sit-ins in front of humanitarian institution offices to show solidarity with their fellowmen prisoned in Israel on the eve of the Palestinian Prisoners' Day.
Palestinians around the world have been observing Prisoners' Day on April 17 since 1974 to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the prisoners and to support them in their quest for freedom.
Representatives of different Palestinian factions participated in the sit-ins, which were respectively held before the offices of the International Red Cross and the UN's humanitarian agency UNRWA in Tripoli. Some Lebanese political parties also took part in the activities.
The Palestinian statistics show that since 1948, Israel has arrested and imprisoned around 800,000 Palestinians, accounting for 25 percent of the entire population.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs, among the 4700 Palestinian prisoners and detainees in Israel, there are nine females, 190 minors, 3,200 administrative detainees, 27 elected members of parliament, and three former ministers. |
