Israel expels 67 Palestinian refugees from Jerusalem: UN report
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-22 21:30

Israel expelled last week 67 Palestinian refugees from Jerusalem after destroying their constructions at al-Khalayleh neighborhood in the city, a UN report said Sunday.

The UN statement, emailed to reporters, said that 67 Palestinians, half of them children, were forced to leave Jerusalem after the Israeli authorities destroyed their homes and other constructions last week.

The Israeli authorities demolished houses of seven families who are all Palestinian refugees and forced them to leave the area of Jerusalem for the third time in six months, according to the statement. The Israeli authorities also confiscated their tents they received as kind of emergency aid.

Chief of the UN Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) in the West Bank condemned the action and reiterated that it is a violation of the international law.

The chief also called on the Israeli authorities to enable Palestinian refugees living in the West Bank and Jerusalem to normally lead their life, said the statement.

The Israeli authorities usually justify the demolition of Palestinian homes, no matter they are refugees or non-refugees, by claiming that those houses were built without getting the proper permission from Israel.

Meanwhile, dozens of Palestinian UNRWA employees organized Sunday a rally and a sit-in in front of UNRWA headquarters in Gaza city to protest against questioning six of their colleagues in Jordan for their political affiliation.

The employees of UNRWA and representatives of various political factions condemned the questioning of the six UNRWA employees and chanted slogans against what they termed as restricting the activities of UNRWA employees.
