Gaza rocket strike prompts Israeli retaliation overnight
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-02 16:10

Israeli Air Force (IAF) planes bombed what the army said was a smuggling tunnel in northern Gaza overnight, after Palestinian militants fired a rocket into Israel earlier Tuesday.

Neither side reported any injuries in the attacks, and officials with the Ashkelon Regional Council said there was no damage in the Kassam attack.

Palestinian militants in the Hamas-ruled enclave fired a similar projectile from the vicinity of Beit Hanoun towards nearby Sderot on Monday, and last week on the eve of Israel Independence Day.

Since the beginning of the year, Gaza militants fired more than 265 rockets into Israel, according to the army.

In a separate incident, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman told Xinhua on Tuesday that Palestinian gunmen opened fire at army vehicles deployed near the security fence near central Gaza, damaging two armored vehicles but causing no injury.

In response, the IAF and Armored Corps units opened fire at suspicious targets.

The army holds Hamas solely responsible for any hostile activity emanating from Gaza, and said it would not tolerate attacks against Israel.
