Israeli army, police brace for "Nakba Day" protests
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-14 19:16

The Israeli army and other security services have beefed up forces and riot gear along its northern border and in the West Bank, as Palestinians and supporters prepare to mark "Nakba (catastrophe) Day," Tuesday.

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli troops and civilians on the date, which mourn Israel's creation in May, 1948, have become more and more common in recent years.

In last year's events, dozens of presumed Palestinian refugees were killed when they tried to pour across the no-man's land between Syria and Israel, as well as trying to rush the fenced border with Lebanon.

Since then, the Israeli army has strengthened the electronic fence and laid anti-personnel mines along the border with Syria, and has fenced a kilometer-long stretch of fence which runs between an Israeli and Lebanese town.

"There are preparations and we will not allow a violation of Israel's sovereignty," an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officer told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.

Along with more familiar non-lethal riot control gear, including tear gas and rubber bullets, the army and police are also readying the use of a sonic projector nicknamed "the screamer, " which emits a directed fast-pulsed tone which causes disorientation and nausea, and a putrid, nausea-inducing spray.

In last month's Land Day events, both devices succeeded in dispersing Palestinian rioters at the Kalandiya crossing point between Jerusalem and Ramallah without injury, while several were injured by volleys of rubber bullets.

Additionally, the army is distributing retrofit parts for standard M-16 semi-automatic rifles, that will enable the use of smaller, less lethal 0.22 rounds, than the larger 5.56 rounds, the report said.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will station more forces along its side of the border, as well.
