Israeli opposition chief comes out against DM over Iran attack warnings
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-17 23:26

The recently-inaugurated head of Israel's Knesset (parliament) opposition is worried over Defense Minister Ehud Barak's talk of attacking Iran, The Jerusalem Post reported on Thursday.

In a recent interview, Labor party leader Shelly Yacimovich came out against considering a military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities -- widely believed by the West to be harboring a clandestine weaponization program -- until all other diplomatic avenues, including increasingly tight oil and banking sanctions, were exhausted.

"All options are on the table, but the military option in my opinion should be the last one," she was quoted as saying.

"We must first exhaust all the economic international options with full cooperation with the U.S. and other powers. Israel cannot turn the Iranian nuclear issue into one that is only our responsibility. We need to be part of a world coalition," she stressed.

"I am not convinced, to say the least, that this is the current government's policy," she said, referring to a number of recent pro-attack statements expressed by both Barak and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Both Netanyahu and Barak have more than hinted that Israel is geared up for a military strike if the latest round of talks, launched in Ankara last month, fail to convince Tehran to halt its nuclear fuel enrichment.

On Monday, Barak sharply criticized as being "too lax" Western requirements for Iranian cooperation and transparency over its nuclear program.

"The demands today (of Iran) ahead of the talks are so minimal, that even if Iran accepts all of them it will still be able to continue and make progress with its nuclear program," Barak told Army Radio.

He called on Iran to "completely cease its (nuclear fuel) enrichment activities, including to levels of 3.5 percent" and reiterated that Israel was weighing a military strike if the talks did not prove successful.

In response to Yacimovich's contentions, however, a source close to Barak said "Yacimovich understands a few issues," adding that "Security and diplomatic issues are not among them."
