Iran's foreign ministry congratulated Egypt on the election of the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohamed Morsi as the country's new president, the Press TV reported on Sunday.
In a statement issued Sunday, the Iranian foreign ministry said that the incoming Egyptian president would "play an effective role in the all-out growth and excellence of the country and the initiation of a transformative era" in Egypt's history.
Head of Egypt's Higher Presidential Election Commission Farouq Sultan announced Sunday afternoon that Morsi has won the presidential election.
Morsi, now chairman of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, got 51.73 percent of all the votes in the run-off round, defeating his rival Ahmed Shafiq who got 48.27 percent. |
