Islamic Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip is making contacts with Egypt to send a delegation to congratulate Egypt's new President Mohammed Morsi, sources told Xinhua on Thursday.
Khaled Mashaal, the exiled leader of Hamas, will head the delegation, which will also comprise senior Hamas members from the Gaza Strip, the sources added.
No date has been set for the meeting yet.
Hamas is the Palestinian extension of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, to which Morsi belongs. In 2007, Hamas wrested control of the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has never met any Hamas official.
Meanwhile, a Hamas official said a government delegation will visit Egypt to discuss outstanding issues with Egyptian officials. The discussions will focus on expanding the number of travelers through Rafah crossing point between Gaza and Egypt and Gaza's electricity crisis, said Hamas official Yousef Rizka. |
