4 Iranians sentenced to death for involvement in 2.6-bln-dollar bank embezzlement

Iran's Prosecutor General, Gholam- Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, said Monday that an Iranian court has issued capital punishment for four suspects convicted of 2.6 billion U.S. dollars bank embezzlement in the country, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Speaking to reporters, Mohseni-Ejei, who is also Iran's Judiciary spokesman, said that the court has finished probe into the case and the judge has issued verdicts for 39 suspects, according to the report.

Four of the 39 suspects have been sentenced to death, two people have been sentenced to life imprisonment and the remaining inmates have received 10, 20 and 25 years prison terms, the Iranian judiciary official was quoted as saying without referring to the names of the convicts.

The official further noted that in addition to the decrees, the court has ordered the convicts to return the assets, said the report.

Iran arrested tens of suspects over the bank corruption which was described as Iran's biggest case of embezzlement ever.

According to the report, the embezzlement case started in 2007 by Amir Mansour Arya Investment Group of companies and progressed in 2010 after some Iranian major banks, including Bank Saderat and Bank Melli, issued loans for the company.

Iranian officials said the case involved the use of fraudulent documents to obtain credit for this investment company. The company used them to purchase assets such as state-owned companies.
