Senior officials' meeting of NAM issues draft document
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-28 04:29

The senior officials' meeting for the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran issued Monday a draft document, which awaits further study by the ministerial meeting in the following days and will be reviewed finally in the summit.

The senior officials' meeting, which opened here Sunday and concluded Monday, will be followed by the ministerial-level meeting on Aug. 28-29, and the summit on Aug. 30-31.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad-Mehdi Akhondzadeh, who is also secretary general of the senior officials' meeting, read parts of the draft document, saying that the document rejects all forms of "occupation" in the world.

It also draws upon the disarmament of WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) and annihilation of nuclear weapons in the world, said Akhondzadeh.

In the meantime, the document calls for the implementation of the slogan of "nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for none," he said, adding that in line with the call, the draft urges for a Middle East free from nuclear weapons.

The Iranian official said in the document the "inalienable" right of all NAM member states for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, envisaged by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), is emphasized.

Besides, it calls on the nations and governments to be actively engaged in the campaign against the use of chemical weapons, he added.

The document underlines the collective management of the world as opposed to the unipolar system pursued by the West, particularly by the United States, said Akhondzadeh.

The senior officials' meeting has included in the draft document a criticism of "double standards" on the world issues and a condemnation of threats against the international peace, said the official.

Other issues, like the imposition of unilateral sanctions by certain powers on independent states, which is against the UN charter, global terrorism, and the Israeli "occupation" of the Palestinian territories, have also been emphasized in the draft document, he added.

The signals sent by the NAM meeting are peace, justice and respect of law, Akhondzadeh stated.

He expressed hope that the ministerial meeting of the NAM will, to some extent, focus on the theme of the summit: "Lasting Peace through Joint Global Governance."
