Palestinians outraged by ruling exonerating Israel over U. S. activist's death
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-28 23:40

The Palestinians were outraged Tuesday by an Israeli court ruling that found the state not guilty in the 2003 death of a U.S. peace activist in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Tuesday slammed the Israeli court that rejected the claim brought by the family of the activist Rachel Corrie, who was crushed to death in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah while trying to stop an Israeli bulldozer from demolishing Palestinian houses.

Ahmed Majdalani, a member of the PLO's Executive Committee, told Xinhua that the ruling "provides a cover to the ugliness of the crime committed against the pro-Palestinian activist."

"This also proves that the Israeli judiciary is an accomplice to the Israeli occupation authorities," Majdalani added, calling on the world's judiciary to follow Corrie's case "to prevent more crimes of murder, arrest and deportation in the future."

Israeli central court in the city of Haifa said Tuesday that the death of the 23-year-old activist was "a regrettable accident" and Israel was not responsible.

Mustafa al-Barghouti, a Palestinian lawmaker, said in a press statement that the Israeli judiciary has never been fair in relation to the killing of Palestinians and now "it is clear that it is not fair in the killing of foreign peace activists who come to Palestine to express solidarity with the Palestinians against the occupation."

Meanwhile, the interior ministry of the Hamas authority in the Gaza Strip said in a press statement that the Israeli ruling is "a comic play," urging to sue Israel in the international courts.

The Palestinian Non-Governmental Organization network also said in a statement that the Israeli judiciary decision "is again bringing to our minds that it is associated with the Israeli army that committed hundreds of crimes against our people."

The Gaza-based Popular Committee to Challenge the Siege said the voice of Corrie and all the Palestinian victims will remain alive, calling on the world to activate the international solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are facing the expansion of settlements, confiscation of lands, killing and attempts to Judaize Jerusalem.
