Palestinians hope to gain support from NAM for UN bid
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-29 20:41

The Palestinians are hoping to achieve major support from members of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to help the Palestinians' bid for UN membership, Palestinian Ambassador to Tehran Salah Zawawi told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday.

On the sidelines of the two-day ministerial level meeting of the 16th NAM summit, Zawawi told Xinhua that "We hope to achieve big support from different member states, and we hope the final statement will be very useful for us. "

On Tuesday, the ministerial level meeting discussed the Palestinian issue, Zawawi said, adding that "we decided to promote our cause with the United Nations to establish our own state and independency."

The ambassador is confident that most of NAM members are sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, so it is not difficult to " promote our cause here...But (the bid for membership of) the United Nations is another story."

As for the current security situation in the Middle East, such as a potential Israeli attack against suspected nuclear facilities in Iran, Zawawi said, "If Israelis attack Iran, they will suffer from their own action." In case of such an attack, Iranians will retaliate, he noted.
