Emirates to resume flights to Baghdad on March 1

Dubai's state-owned carrier Emirates Airline said Tuesday that it will resume flights to the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on March 1 after halting them since Jan. 27 following a shooting incident at Baghdad airport.

Emirates, the biggest carrier in the Middle East, will resume six flights a week to Baghdad, served by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

The return services between Dubai and Baghdad follow a comprehensive safety and security review in conjunction with the Gulf Civil Aviation Authority, said Majid Al-Mualla, divisional senior vice president of commercial operations for Emirates.

Four Emirati carriers, including Emirates' subsidiary FlyDubai, Emirates Airline, Air Arabia from Sharjah and Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi, suspended their flights to Baghdad after a passenger aircraft of FlyDubai was shot at Baghdad airport on Jan. 27.

Following the shooting incident, other regional airlines, such as Lebanon's MEA, also suspended flights to Baghdad.

Emirates has been flying to Baghdad since 2011 and also flies to the Iraqi cities of Erbil and Basra.
