Russia may impose grain export duties from April
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-01 03:02

The Russian government may impose grain export duties from April to curb the country's grain export, the Russian Grain Union said on Tuesday.

Arkady Zlochevsky. president of the Union, told reporters that Russia's grain export was expected to hit 2 million tons in January and would reach 25 million tons by April 1.

In 2011, the country's grain output reached nearly 98 million tons, 18 million of which has been exported.

"The grain export showed surprising dynamics in January... If this trend persists, we'll export more than 25 million tons out of Russia," Zlochevsky said.

According to the government, Russia will adopt measures to limit its grain exports if the export volume reaches 24 to 25 million tons.

"By April 1, the level of 25 million tons of grain export will be reached at current export rates," Zlochevsky said, adding that the government may work out the policy by the end of March and it is now considering whether to impose floating export duties or flat export duties.

Russia is one of the world's largest grain exporters. It exports grain to some 84 countries.
