Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Friday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index dropping over 2 percent, as investors offloaded issues following an overnight rout on Wall Street, triggered by concerns over the outlook for the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 452.81 points, or 2.26 percent, from last Friday to close the day at 19,561.96.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 22.93 points, or 1.53 percent, to finish at 1,471.16.

Precision instrument, electric appliance and machinery-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play on the first trading day of the week.

Markets here were closed from Monday to Thursday for holidays.
