Russia has fulfilled its environmental obligations as part of preparations for the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak said Thursday.
As preparations for the Winter Games are nearing completion, Russia "has honored all of its environmental obligations," Kozak told reporters in Sochi.
"The latest environmental measures intended to offset any negative impact on Sochi's nature include expanding the area of the Sochi National Park, compensation for the hydrocarbon effects caused by construction, as well as the appearance of new plants," said the official.
Meanwhile, a program to restore the Central Asian leopard population in the Caucasus has been successfully implemented, Kozak said, adding environment of Sochi will become "even better" after the 2014 games.
The 22nd Winter Olympics are slated for Feb. 7-23, 2014 in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
