Sochi is ready to deliver the 22nd Winter Olympic Games after a seven-year preparation to give the city a makeover, said Sochi Games organizers on the second day of the 126th International Olympic Committee session Thursday.
On the eve of the opening ceremony, the Sochi Olympics organizing committee president and CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko promised a fabulous Games in the Black Sea city.
Making his final progress report, he told the IOC members that Sochi is "fully ready to deliver ... the most unforgettable celebration of sport in Winter Games history."
"From the beginning of our Olympic journey, legacy was our guide," Chernyshenko said. "The Olympic Games were the catalyst we used to speed up the renovation of this most beautiful part of Russia, which needed it since the middle of last century."
To meet the needs of the sport extravaganza, Sochi invested 51 billion U.S. dollars on venues and infrastructure, making Sochi 2014 the most expensive Olympics ever.
The Olympic Park and all venues for Sochi 2014 were built from scratch, the first time this has happened in preparation for any edition of the Olympic Games. Besides, modern roads and railway lines were built, new engineering networks and up-to-date engineering infrastructure were set up and many of the city's cultural venues, schools and pre-school institutions have also been renovated as part of preparations for the Games, according to the organizers.
As a result, Chernyshenko believed the city will soon enjoy international fame.
"Sochi has become an international year-round sports, business and tourism destination, built from scratch in one Games preparation cycle. We are ready to welcome the world."
Sochi Olympics opens on Friday. Nearly 3,000 athletes from 87 countries and regions will compete for 98 gold medals in 15 disciplines across seven sports.
