Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-07 18:29

Secretary general of the Cairo-based Arab League (AL), Nabil al-Arabi, congratulated Wednesday U.S. President Barack Obama for his re-election.

"History proved U.S. president in the second term is capable of achieving hard missions and taking major responsibilities," al- Arabi said.

Al-Arabi also stressed that maintaining security and peace in the Middle East region is important for American people.

Earlier Wednesday, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi sent a congratulatory telegram to Obama for his re-election, expressing hopes to reinforce ties between Egypt and the United States.

Polls were open Tuesday for the voters in the United States to select between incumbent Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. With the participation of around 120 million voters, the election guaranteed Obama another four years to bring changes he promised to the United States.

Obama visited Egypt during his first presidential term in June 2009 and delivered a speech at the Cairo University, calling for a new beginning between the United States and the Muslim world.
