Egyptian national security forces foiled a terror attack attempt against foreign vessels crossing the Suez Canal, an Interior Ministry source said Wednesday.
The mastermind of the plot was Suleiman Abdel Razek, a resident of Ismailia province, official MENA news agency said.
Egypt's National Security Agency found Razek was trying to recruit associates and had already convinced one of his neighbors to help him use an empty piece of land to launch the attack, MENA quoted the source as saying.
The two suspects have been detained for 15 days for further questioning, the report said.
The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The strategic waterway garnered 5.22 billion U.S. dollars of revenue in 2011.
An average of 50 vessels cross the canal daily. |
