Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel on Tuesday held talks with South African Deputy Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Luwellyn Landers on issues related to security cooperation and illegal migration.

Messahel told reporters that he discussed with Landers on bilateral cooperation, especially in the fields of security coordination, and fighting violent extremism and illegal immigration.

He further hailed Algeria's ties with South Africa as "good and strategic," noting that the latter has been playing a "key role" in Africa as it is due to become a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council to represent the continent.

The top Algerian diplomat also discussed with Landers the bilateral coordination within the African Union and the United Nations on defending their interests as partner countries and those of the African continent in the international arena.

For his part, Landers noted that "some recommendations we drawn up during my talks with Messahel will be submitted for discussion at the next meeting of the foreign ministers of the two nations."

Messahel announced that South African Foreign Minister Lindiwe Sisulu will pay a work visit to Algeria late November or early December.
