A police officer was injured after gunshots were fired outside the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, triggering a brief security lockdown of the entire complex, local police said.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine told a news briefing that the suspect was a female and that a child may have been in the car that the suspect was driving.

The suspect tried to ram through a security barricade blocking the stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House and then led police on a chase that ended in gunfire outside the Capitol, according to multiple news reports.

A police officer was wounded in a car crash during the chase, Dine said.

Dine said no information was currently related to terrorism and that the shooting appeared to be "an isolated incident."

The U.S. Capitol and adjacent buildings were locked down for about one hour after the shooting.

U.S. Capitol Police required staff in all Senate Office buildings to immediately shelter in place and stay away from external doors and windows. The pedestrian walkway in front of the White House was also quickly locked down after the incident was reported.

As of 3:01 p.m., the Senate Sergeant at Arms announced via its Twitter account that the lockdown of the area has been lifted and people may exit shelter locations and resume normal activities.

The shooting occurred at around 2:19 p.m. EDT, The Washington Post reported.

The FBI also dispatched units in response to the incident.
