Calls for a boycott of In-N-Out Burger, a California-based popular burger chain, triggered a controversy on social media Thursday following news of the company's 25,000-U.S.-dollar donation to the Republican Party.

The West Coast's most famous burger chain was blasted by Eric Bauman, the chairman of the California Democratic Party, who on Wednesday night called for a boycott on his official Twitter account in response to In-N-Out's contribution to the state's Republican Party.

Bauman tweeted: "Tens of thousands of dollars donated to the California Republican Party ... it's time to #BoycottInNOut - let Trump and his cronies support these creeps ... perhaps animal style!"

Since then, the hashtag #BoycottInNOut spread on social media with many consumer supports.

"In-N-Out is a staple for our friends visiting from out of state and my kids after sport celebrations - but NO MORE. Grab your wallet folks - this is a no brainer. @innoutburger." a Twitter user Katrina Hagen wrote Thursday noon, who described herself as a "Proud member of the resistance".

Andy Behrman, a writer, tweeted: "Count me in -- love @innoutburger but I won't be eating there with my family any longer because of their donation to the @GOP #BoycottInNOut."

Meanwhile, some on the other side of the aisle showed their support for the burger chain.

"Two please," tweeted Antonio Sabato Jr., a Republican who is running for Congress in California. "More of a reason to go and eat a great Burger!! Two please! The cult fast food chain In-N-Out is taking sides in this year's election-or is it?"

In-N-Out Executive Vice President Arnie Wensinger issued a statement Thursday afternoon, saying the restaurant chain donated equal fund to both Democratic and Republican political action committees in the Golden State.

"For years, In-N-Out Burger has supported lawmakers who, regardless of political affiliation, promote policies that strengthen California and allow us to continue operating with the values of providing strong pay and great benefits for our associates," Wensinger said.

"While it is unfortunate that our contributions to support both political parties in California has caused concern with some groups, we believe that bipartisan support is a fair and consistent approach that best serves the interests of our company and all of our customers."

In-N-Out Burger is an American regional chain of fast food restaurants founded in 1948 in Baldwin Park, a city 40 kilometers east of Los Angeles downtown. So far, the chain has expanded to 355 locations in the American Southwest and Pacific coast, including Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Texas and Nevada.

The iconic burger chain, which achieved widespread popularity for maintaining the style and taste of family-owned, decades-old businesses, has fans in a number of renowned chefs, who even called it "the best restaurant in Los Angeles."
