Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-12 15:07

Myanmar President U Thein Sein reiterated on Sunday that his government is focusing on clean government and good governance in building nation.

"Successful establishment of modern, developed democratic new nation calls for combination of democracy with good governance," Thein Sein said in his message on the occasion of the country's 65th anniversary of the Union Day.

He called on people in the country to make joint efforts to boost modernization of the nation and socio-economic improvement of its people.

Noting that the government is holding peace talks with ethnic armed groups, Thein Sein urged participation of the entire nationalities in bringing internal armed conflicts to an end and building lasting peace in the country.

"There may be different points of view in practicing democracy, but all are to cooperatively work for matters of common concern in the interest of the nation," he maintained, pointing out that people are to see democratic contest in elections and equal participation in state's affairs.

Citing the granting of amnesty to prisoners for four time since the new government assumed office, Thein Sein said the move was for ensuring stability of the state, enabling all to participate in political process and building eternal peace.

The move can also be seen as the new government's respect to people's voice and fulfillment of their aspiration.

Claiming that democracy is being introduced in Myanmar with notable success, U Thein Sein said that democracy will grow stronger. He pledged determination to keep on promoting democracy peacefully.

Feb. 12 was designated as Myanmar's Union Day. On the very day in 1947, ethnic leaders met at the Panlong Conference in northeastern Shan state and signed the Panlong Agreement to strive in unity for the country's independence from the then British colonialist rule. Within one year, Myanmar won its independence and became a sovereign nation on Jan. 4, 1948.

Meanwhile, a central-level conference, similar to the historical Panlong Conference, has been planned to be held in Nay Pyi Taw in order to build peace in the country in the new era, the government's peace-making group at central level said.
