Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-13 22:43

Myanmar President U Thein Sein met with visiting European Union Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, state radio and television reported.

Piebalgs was accompanied by German development minister Dirk Niebel.

The two sides had discussions and exchanged views on EU's proposed new aid package to Myanmar, the reports said.

Piebalgs arrived in Myanmar on Sunday for a three-day visit to assess the country's latest development. The EU is expected to provide 150 million euros (about 200 million U.S. dollars) in additional aid to Myanmar over the next two years to acknowledge Myanmar's reform.

The new-package aid is said to primarily focus on health and education.

Piedalgs is scheduled to meet with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon on Tuesday and visit an EU-run clinic.

It is the first trip to Myanmar by a top EU official after the new government took office in March 2011 and started reform.

Reports from Brussels said, on April 23, EU foreign ministers will explore the possibility of a new substantial reduction or even the ending of sanctions on Myanmar.
