Thai parliament to debate charter amendment drafts
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-21 10:47

Joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate on Thursday will be held to deliberate three charter amendment drafts, House Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont said on Monday.

According to Somsak, who is also the parliament president, said there were three different bills supported by the government, the ruling Pheu Thai Party and the coalition Chartthaipattana Party.

All three propose the amendment only of Section 291 of the 2007 constitution, each seeking to set up a constitution drafting assembly (CDA), but with a different number of members and different selection process.

Somsak said he had asked the government, opposition and senate whips to meet and decide how many days the parliament would need for the deliberation. However, he believed that the joint sitting may need one day as the three drafts seek to amend only one article.

Once the draft passed the first reading, a joint scrutiny committee will be set up to examine the draft.
