Japan ended this season's whale hunt in the Antarctic Ocean, having caught less than it originally planned, according to the Fisheries Agency.
A total of 266 minke whales and one fin whale were killed, the agency said, below the planned 850 and 50 respectively when they left Japan in last December.
The whaling fleet finished its operation Tuesday on schedule and is expected to arrive in late March, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Michihiko Kano told a press conference on Friday.
Militant environmentalist group Sea Shepherd had obstructed Japanese whaling operations 11 times during the season, according to Kano.
A surveillance ship was sent to enhance the security of the fleet by the Fisheries Agency this season, as last season's operation was forced to stop earlier by the obstructions. |
