According to Prime Minister's Office Permanent Secretary Thongthong Chantarangsu, so far altogether 2,129 people from Bangkok and other provinces applied for compensation.
The compensation covers the family members of those who lost their lives as well as those who were disabled, lost their vital organs, and badly or slightly injured.
The application period ends on April 12 and the panel responsible for remedies will begin verifications of the application and payment is expected to start in late April, he said.
The permanent secretary said the families of the dead would immediately receive 3 million baht (97,500 U.S. dollars) in cash and the remaining 4.5 million baht (146,250 U.S. dollars) will be paid in other forms.
As for the two foreigners -- Italian and Japanese journalists -- who died in 2010 political protests, he said, they are entitled to receive full compensation immediately and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would coordinate the matter with their families. |
