India investigates possible left-wing rebel infiltration in labor violence of auto plant
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-23 13:22

Indian authorities are investigating whether extreme-left rebels have infiltrated into the labor violence at Indian-Japanese auto plant Maruti Suzuki near the Indian capital which left one dead and many injured over the past week.

The local daily Times of India electronic edition Monday said " the bloody and systematic attack on the senior management at Maruti's Manesar plant may have been the result of Naxal influence, " in reference to the left-wing rebels fighting the government for more than four decades, mainly in the countryside.

The report quoted "sources within the government" as saying intelligence agencies have been asked to investigate whether the rebels are infiltrating trade unions in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt near the Indian capital.

The agencies are looking at a couple of trade unions operating in and around Delhi to identify possible Naxal sympathizers within them, or people who could be acting as a front for Naxal elements, said the report.

Maruti Suzuki Saturday announced an indefinite lockout of the plant at Manesar in Haryana state near Delhi, after one of its senior managers was killed and several dozen supervisors -- including two Japanese nationals-- were injured last week by workers protesting labor rights abuses and wage cuttings.

Maruti Suzuki is India's largest passenger car producer, occupying 45 percent of the nation's passenger auto market.
