India's ruling Congress party lauds Prime Minister for economic reforms
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-09-25 15:46

India's ruling Congress party Tuesday lauded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for initiating the recent bold measures aimed at improving the economic situation of the country.

"The 30-member Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution endorsing the key reform measures taken by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," Congress spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi said after a core committee meeting at party chief Sonia Gandhi's residence in New Delhi.

He added: "Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, in her inaugural speech, emphasized on the need to take tough measures to accelerate the economic growth of the country. She also expressed happiness over the bold steps taken by the government to improve the overall economic situation."

The spokesperson also said that Gandhi slammed the opposition parties, describing their role as "not constructive". "The CWC later passed a resolution endorsing the Prime Minister's leadership and the decisions taken by his government," he stated.

The core committee also discussed the exit of its ally Trinamul Congress from the coalition government over economic reforms like hike in diesel price and approval of foreign direct investment in retail sector -- the reforms were initiated by the Prime Minister last week in a bid to revive the economy.
