Indian army officials have sounded alert on the line-of-control (LoC) dividing Kashmir into Indian and Pakistani controlled parts, following the killing of two Indian soldiers, officials said Wednesday.

"Following yesterday's incident of intrusion by the Pakistani army and subsequent killing of two Indian troopers, an alert has been sounded on LoC and border in Kashmir," said an official. " The step has been taken to thwart such incidents in future."

On Tuesday Indian army officials said Pakistani troops crossed LoC in Mankote-Mendhar belt of Poonch district, around 185 km southwest of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, and killed two Indian soldiers.

However, Pakistani army denied the Indian charge.

On Sunday, Pakistan claimed that Indian army entered into their territory in Haji Pir sector in Uri around 110 km northwest of Srinagar and attacked their post killing one trooper. The claim however was rejected by Indian army saying only an exchange of fire took place between the two sides.

New Delhi and Islamabad in 2003 agreed on a ceasefire along the International Border and LoC in Kashmir. Though some violations have been reported on both sides, the ceasefire remains in effect.

Defense officials say intrusion of India and Pakistan troopers into each other's territory was unheard of in the recent past.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from British rule in 1947, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
