The Indian capital came to a standstill Tuesday following heavy rains since late Monday night, which caused long spells of power failure and massive traffic jams triggered by water-logging across the city.

A senior Indian Meteorological Department official said that more rains and thunderstorms were likely to hit the national capital throughout the day and the minimum temperature would also go down in the evening. "This type of weather is likely to continue for the next couple of days," he said.

Meanwhile, traffic was thrown out of gear in different parts of the Indian capital because of rampant water-logging. "We have deployed some additional traffic policemen to man the roads," a senior police official said, on condition of anonymity.

The residents of the Indian capital also complained of massive power blackout in various places since early morning. "Power failure in the national capital is a matter of shame. How much can we depend on the power back-ups. The government never properly addresses the shortage of power," an angry resident said.
