Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Monday that he will travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly next month if his new government can be formed by this month.

The prime minister's Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won the sixth general election on July 29, receiving 4.87 million votes, or 76.78 percent, of the total valid ballots, according to the National Election Committee (NEC)'s preliminary results.

Based on the preliminary results, the CPP calculated that it had won all 125 seats in the parliament.

The NEC's official results will be announced on Aug. 15.

"If our new cabinet can be formed by August ... I will have time to go to the United Nations to deliver a speech for you to see that as a sovereign state, which held its own elections, we do not need stamps of approval from anyone, but our king," he said in a televised speech during a meeting with athletes.

However, the prime minister said if the time is unfavorable, he will stick to his original plan to skip the United Nations General Assembly and form the new government on Sept. 20.
