Nepali President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Sunday congratulated Arif-ur-Rehman Alvi on his election as Pakistan's president, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said here on Sunday.

In her message, the Nepali president stated that Nepal and Pakistan enjoy close and cordial relations based on goodwill, friendship and mutual understanding.

"Highlighting the growing people-to-people contacts which have further contributed to consolidate bilateral relations, she has mentioned that beyond bilateral cooperation, the two countries have been working together at regional and international forums on matters of mutual interest," a press statement issued by the foreign ministry quoted the president as saying.

Bhandari also expressed her willingness to work closely with the Pakistani president in the days ahead for further strengthening the cordial relations between the two countries and peoples.

Arif Alvi, a senior leader of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was elected as the new president of the South Asian country on Sept. 4.

Alvi replaced Mamnoon Hussain, who completed his five-year term on Sept. 8.

Alvi, a founding member of PTI, was elected member of the National Assembly in the general elections on July 25 from his home constituency in the southern port city of Karachi, and is considered very close to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He served as secretary general of the PTI for several years.
