Egyptian mediator in Israel to finalize deal with hunger strikers
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-14 21:53

An Egyptian envoy arrived in Israel Monday to finalize an Egyptian-mediated agreement between Israel and hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners, a Palestinian official said.

The deal is designed to end the hunger strike of at least 1,500 Palestinians who demand improvements in their detention conditions and an end to the so-called administrative detention and solitary confinement.

The Egyptian envoy will meet Israeli officials to resolve the last obstacle before signing the deal, said Ziad Abu Ein of the Palestinian ministry of prisoners' affairs, referring to the administrative detention, which means holding hundreds of Palestinians without any charge or trial.

Abu Ein said Israel retracted a pledge to either convict or release all the prisoners on administrative detention. "This can allow Israel to evade its obligations when the prisoners end the strike."

Qadoura Fares, head of the Palestinian Prisoner's Club, said the Egyptian official will meet representative of the hunger strikers at Ashkelon prison. The two sides will talk about the final details of the agreement that was prepared in Cairo.

Palestinian officials said earlier Monday that the Egyptian efforts succeeded and Israel agreed to consider the demands of the detainees.

The strike started on April 17. Some of the detainees started their fasting individually before that date and two of them have entered their 76th day of fasting.

Israel holds 4,700 Palestinians, 320 of them on administrative detention.
