UN calls on Syria to respect border with Lebanon
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-02 20:27

The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly said Monday that UN chief Ban Ki-moon has called on Syria to respect its border with Lebanon in his latest report, Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

"Ban's latest report made the point that even if there was uncertainty as to the precise delineation of the border, there could be no justification for the killing or abduction of citizens, " Plumbly was quoted by the report as saying after meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour.

"The secretary-general's report on the implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 addressed the general issue of the importance of all parties respecting Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and specifically called on Syria to respect the border," he said.

Plumbly's remarks came after a statement by Lebanon's general security saying that the Syrian army entered through al-Buqaiaa crossing point in north Lebanon and fired at Jisr al-Qmar, damaging the customs building and a number of cars.

Plumbly added the report "also addresses issues of security and stability in Lebanon, which are crucial to the implementation of the resolution, and thanked the government and people of Lebanon for the hospitality shown to displaced persons from Syria" Plumbly added.

The UN official said that Ban's report lauded the efforts exerted by the Lebanese leaders to protect their country from the negative effects of the Syrian crisis, and mainly the initiative of President Michel Suleiman in pursuing the national dialogue among bickering officials from the March 8 and 14 camps.
