Turkish Airlines (THY) has canceled 81 flights, 26 international and 55 domestic, scheduled for Thursday due to the heavy snowfall across Turkey.
THY's official website said that the cancelled international flights include those between Istanbul and the following cities: Pristina, Donetsk, Tbilisi, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Nuremberg, Baku, Budapest, Stuttgart, Mosul, Tabriz and Tripoli.
Domestic flights between Ataturk Airport in Istanbul and the following destinations are canceled on Thursday: Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Trabzon, Adana, Kayseri, Erzurum, Antalya, Denizli, Batman, Mardin, Antalya, Nevsehir, Adiyaman, Kahramanmaras, Sivas and Van.
Flights between Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Asian side of the city and Trabzon, Gaziantep, Ankara and Kars are also cancelled.
Schools have been closed since Wednesday in 14 Turkish provinces: Balikesir, Giresun, Ordu, Samsun, Rize, Tokat, Bartin, Konya, Artvin, Bursa, Elazig, Karabuk, Nevsehir and Kilis provinces due to heavy snow.
The heavy snowfall started on the night of Dec. 10 in Istanbul and will continue until Friday, according to weather forecast.
Nine people were injured and a total of 37 accidents occurred on Wednesday night due to poor road conditions. Salt trucks are now operating continuously to prevent roads from turning into ice rinks.
