Clashes erupted at dawn Sunday between pro-Syrian gunmen and backers of the Syrian rebels near the Sports City center, with undefined number of casualties reported, the National News Agency (NNA) said.

The NNA said that clashes erupted between supporters of pro- Syrian Arab Movement leader Shaker Berjawi and Salafists supporters of the rebel movement against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Rocket-propelled grenades and machine-guns were used in the clashes.

The Lebanese army intervened in an effort to contain the clashes, but tension in the area remains high.

Berjawi, a staunch supporter of the Syrian regime, was forced out of his offices near the Beirut Sports City center following clashes with supporters of Almustaqbal Movement led by former Prime Minster Saad Hariri in May 2012.
