Indonesia's exports in March increased by 5.5 percent to 17.27 billion U.S. dollar from a year ago, the Statistic Bureau announced here on Tuesday.

The amount of shipping of goods to overseas in the first three months rose by 6.93 percent to 48.53 billion U.S. dollars, Head of the Statistic Bureau named only Suryamin told a press conference here.

Export of non-oil and gas rose by 3.87 percent to 38.53 billion U.S. dollar from January to March, he said.

Indonesia's exports are dominated by basic needs such as natural resources products and plantation crops, which make it less affected by the gloomy global economy.

Indonesia reliance on exports is less than other Asian peers. The country's exports only account for about 26 percent of the GDP, according to Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan.

On import, it increased by 13.40 percent to 16.43 billion U.S. dollar in March year on year, said Suryamin.
