Spain received 37.1 million international visitors in the first six months of the year, a 1.8-percent rise year-on-year, Spain's National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported on Wednesday.

The INE said that international tourists spent 38.9 million euros (45.4 million U.S. dollars) in the first half of the year, a 4.2-percent rise when compared with the same period of 2017.

Arrivals from Britain reached 8.4 million, meaning a 2 percent fall year-on-year, while arrivals from France reached 4.8 million, 1.4 percent more than in 2017.

In June alone, the country received 8.5 million international tourists, an increase of 1.3 percent over the same month of a year earlier. They spent 9.39 million euros in June alone, a year-on-year increase of 4.5 percent. Average spending per tourist reached 1,100 euros, up 3.2 percent year-on-year.

In June, arrivals from Britain reached 2.2 million, accounting for 25.3 percent of the total international visitors. Meanwhile, visitors from Germany and France reached 1.2 million and 902,620 respectively, the INE said.

Spain is one of the main tourist destinations in the world.

The Secretary General of the Tourism Board of the Government of Spain German Porras said recently in an interview that Spain is very likely to see moderate growth in tourism this year, as the growth between 2013 and 2018, when the number of tourists increased to 80 million from 60 million, "could be unsustainable", because of the high pressure it put on the infrastructure.
