Brunei's Consumer Price Index (CPI) in May decreased by 0.1 percent year-on-year, owing to drop in prices of clothing and furniture, according to latest statistics released on Thursday.
In its monthly CPI report, the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) at the Prime Minister's Office said the Non-Food Index decreased by 0.7 percent, while the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index increased by 2.6 percent year-on-year.
The drop in the overall CPI in May was largely attributed to the decrease in the indices of Clothing and Footwear (6.5 percent); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (1.2 percent); and and Transport (0.9 percent).
On a period-on-period basis, CPI in January to May 2018 registered an increase of 0.2 percent as compared to the same period last year.
CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period. Brunei's list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household.
