Tokyo stocks retreated slightly on Thursday morning as investors refrained from making bold moves amid escalating U.S.-China trade frictions and as Tokyo and the U.S. hold thorny trade discussions in Washington on Thursday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 60.13 points, or 0.27 percent, from Wednesday to 22,584.18.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 5.39 points, or 0.31 percent, at 1,739.32.

Nonferrous metal, oil and coal product, and construction-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
