India's private internet and mobile services provider Reliance Jio has emerged as the biggest player with a whopping nearly 38 percent of the market share.

The company's total internet base stood at around 494 million at the end of March 2018, while the total subscribers stood at 186.5 million, the Times of India reported while quoting figures from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday.

The success of Reliance Jio is attributed to "4G" only services and very low data tariffs, compared to its competitors, added the newspaper.

Notably, Reliance Jio had started mobile internet operations only in 2016.

With a market share of 23.5 percent, "Airtel" is the next best mobile and internet provider. "Airtel" started services in late 1990s. The company is saddled with a large base of "2G" subscribers, out of whom many use non-internet feature phones only for voice-calls.

The other two cellular companies "Vodafone" and "Idea", which are on for a merger soon, are way behind with a market share of 15.4 percent (76 million users) and 9.5 percent (47 million).

Meanwhile, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) which has provides services across the country, except the cities of Delhi and Mumbai has a share of 6.4 percent (31.4 million users).
