New orders for factory goods in the United States rose 2.3 percent in August, the biggest monthly increase since September 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau said on Thursday.

According to a monthly survey conducted by the bureau, new orders for manufactured goods in August increased by 11.5 billion U.S. dollars to 510.5 billion dollars.

The survey showed that orders for July were also revised to a 0.5 percent decrease instead of a 0.8 percent drop which was previously reported.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in August surged 4.4 percent, while nondurable goods orders gained 0.2 percent at the same period, said the bureau.

Unfilled orders, an indicator of the backlog in production, rose by 10.4 billion dollars to 1,176.5 billion dollars in August.

U.S. Census Bureau's Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories, and Orders survey is based on a panel of approximately 5,000 reporting units that represent approximately 3,100 companies. The survey provides an indication of month-to-month change for the U.S. manufacturing sector.
