Tokyo stocks opened lower Monday following the U.S. Nasdaq Composite Index's slump late last week, which saw Japanese tech-related issues duly retreat.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 221.38 points, or 0.98 percent, from Friday to 22,310.70.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 16.04 points, or 0.95 percent, to 1,676.81.

Oil and coal product, glass and ceramics product and electric appliance-related issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes from the morning bell.
